Amma Naanu Devaraane

There is something irresistibly charming about the many little stories of Krishna’s childhood—his mischief, his innocence, and, above all, his extraordinary ability to talk his way out of trouble! Amma Naanu Devaraane is a beautiful bhavageethe that brings one such delightful episode to life: little Krishna, the notorious butter thief, caught with the evidence quite literally smeared across his face! When mother Yashoda confronts him, Krishna launches into an earnest defence of his innocence. With all the solemnity a little child can muster, he says: “Amma, just look for yourself! The butter pot is hanging so high up on the ceiling. How could I possibly have brought it down with these tiny little hands?” And then, as though this explanation were not convincing enough, he comes up with an even more ingenious one: “I swear to God, Amma, I did not steal the butter. All these little cowherd boys must have smeared it on my mouth!” One can almost see the scene unfold—the mischievous little Shyaama, desperately trying to appear innocent, wiping the butter from his mouth… and then, rather suspiciously, hiding the very hand he has just used behind his back! 😊 And Yashoda? She needs no further proof. She simply smiles, places the churner aside, and lovingly kisses her beloved little Krishna—the Shyaama so adored by the saint-poet Sooradaasa. It is this combination of mischief, innocence, humour, and immeasurable maternal love that makes the song so enchanting. Beneath the playful banter lies something deeply tender: the timeless bond between a mother and her child, where even mischief becomes an occasion for affection. The lyrics are penned with great warmth and delicacy by Dr H. S. Venkatesh Murthy, with music composed by Mysore Ananthaswamy. Together, they have created a little musical world in which one can almost hear the laughter, see the butter-smeared face of Krishna, and feel Yashoda’s indulgent love.
