Director Puttanna Kanagal left a treasure of 24 fabulous Kannada movies on various social subjects that mesmerized, intrigued and riveted film fans with much appreciation and delight. One such movie is Gejje Pooje made in 1969. Clearly, Puttanna was a genius who was 15 to 20 years ahead of his competition. The subjects he dealt with, the way he treated the various sensitivities and the conclusions he arrived at were always thought provoking. Several of his ideas were later modeled in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil movies. This song is picturized on Kalpana and Gangadhar in the backdrop of a vast expanse of Malenadu hills and valleys. The song attempts to capture the new found excitement of the girl who just heard a very exciting and unbelievable message. She is on the top of the world and sings at the top of her voice. This is by far the most difficult song that I have dared to attempt. The entire song is placed at high pitch and the aalaps were the most difficult to render beyond my voice range, testing the limits of my vocal cords. There is also a high energy and feeling of excitement in the song that I could not afford to compromise. Once again, I learned that S.Janaki is an inimitable and extraordinary singer with a voice range beyond most singers. I enjoyed singing this brilliant composition and hope the effort is well worth it. I am dedicating this song to Visali avre. She enjoys classic old Kannada songs and suggested that I sing some of those.
